VETERANS and MILITARY FAMILIES for PROGRESS is a national organization dedicated to ensuring that the rights and needs of veterans, active-duty service members and their families are:
-
understood by the American public,
-
endorsed by our elected officials, and
-
protected by legislation, regulation, and public policy initiatives.
VETERANS and MILITARY FAMILIES for PROGRESS is a
a 21st Century
VA-recognized veterans organization whose membership consists of veterans, military families and active duty military personnel, including the National Guard and Reserves, with regional, state and local chapters across the country. It is organized as a
501(c)(4) Nonprofit, Nonpartisan, and Tax-exempt entity .
Unlike traditional veterans service organizations, our 501(c)(4) status allows us to:
- Use a majority of our funding and time to advocate and lobby Congress and the Executive Branch for issues of policy affecting veterans and military families
- Apply the remainder of our funding and efforts to endorse and work on behalf of candidates for national office who embrace our position on these issues
In addition, VMFP is unique among such veterans' organizations in that family members participate at all levels of our organization, with full voting rights.
VMFP was formed in February of 2005 at a meeting of veterans and military family members from across the country who were concerned about an overextended military due to numerous deployments, and the erosion of benefits for veterans, military personnel (including Guard and Reserve) and military families. We promote public policy that specifically addresses such "coming home" issues as physical and mental health care, education, employment, housing, and homelessness. We believe these patriotic and courageous men, women and families, who have together defended our nation and our liberties at home and abroad, have earned appropriate and adequate support.
